The exhibition Karen Neems: Orchestrated Realities features digital and mixed-media collage artworks by Neems that contain "orchestrated realities and perceptual puzzles." We hope you will join us for the artist's reception on Saturday, April 26th from 2 pm – 4 pm, which is free and open to the public. We'll have art, conversation, and light refreshments. The show runs during our regular business hours 8:30 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday from April 14th – July 3, 2025.

Karen Neems is an artist based in Stamford, Connecticut who has had numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries and museums in the Northeast. Last year, she was among ten photographic artists included in an exhibition called In/Sight at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan. Whether she is creating collages digitally or cutting and pasting prints and other media, Neems says she chooses “to use photography to explore the relationships between images I observe and record, rather than for its documentary aspect.”

For more information about the artist and exhibition, please see the webpage for the exhibition and Karen Neems’ website

Gentle Mindfulness Yoga

Let Dawn guide you through gentle yoga moves that are perfect for all levels. Learn breathing and relaxation techniques to take off the mat and out into the real world. Enjoy some stretching and leave class feeling calm and rejuvenated!

Dawn will then lead you through a gentle, slow flow yoga planned carefully to help the body and mind release tension. Modifications are offered during all classes so that new students as well as seasoned yogis or yoginis can benefit from this nurturing practice.

Breathing techniques designed to alleviate stress both on and off the mat (in the real world, where let's face it most stress happens) will be taught and practiced.

Classes will incorporate the principles of mediation and mindfulness. The goal of this class is that you feel relaxed, rejuvenated and centered when you leave class. Additionally these skills can often help you to manage situational stress/anxiety/tension as it occurs once you step off your mat and head back into the real world.

No yoga or meditation experience necessary. Bring your own yoga mat and a small blanket or beach towel.

Requirements:

Comfortable clothing, your own yoga mat, yoga strap

*Saint Joseph Parenting Center is a non-secular, non-profit organization. The mission of Saint Joseph Parenting Center is to educate parents in the hopes of strengthening the family and breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect

Saint Joseph Parenting Center will be hosting an 9-week Women's Circle!

The Women's Circle is a support group for women to share, explore, build skills, and encourage one another to live authentically in mind, body, heart, and spirit. The topics focus on Self-love, self-esteem, being a well woman, and connecting with others.

The self-care program will enable moms to learn other aspects of living a healthy life, including taking care of themselves in a way that they regularly neglect to do because they fear that it is overly indulgent. Our mothers, who are the primary caretakers, do not get opportunities to spend time on their personal needs and desires, they are the very things that speak to who they are or want to become.

Providing the self-care practicum to the mothers as a group is in line with research on ways to prevent child abuse and neglect. Research shows that an individual's insulation and isolation from society are contributing factors to child abuse. The more alienated a person feels, the greater their stress, and the higher the incidence of child abuse and neglect. One of the most important aspects of our program is the sense of community that exists among the participants.

Dinner and Childcare provided!

Do you love action-packed adventure? Are you ready for the thrill? You’re invited to a riveting conversation with New York Times bestselling author Gregg Hurwitz as he chats with us about his Orphan X series and his life as a writer of suspenseful storytelling.

Orphan X, the series opener, introduces the world to the Nowhere Man. He is a legendary figure spoken about only in whispers. It’s said that when he’s reached by the truly desperate and deserving, the Nowhere Man can and will do anything to protect and save them.

But he’s not merely a legend.

Evan Smoak is a man with skills, resources, and a personal mission to help those with nowhere else to turn. He’s also a man with a dangerous past. Taken from a group home at twelve, Evan was raised and trained as part of the Orphan Program, an off-the-books operation designed to create deniable intelligence assets—i.e. assassins. Evan was Orphan X. He broke with the Program, using everything he learned to disappear and reinvent himself as the Nowhere Man.

Now ten books in, fans cannot get enough of the Orphan X world and Hurwitz can’t wait to tell us all about it. Register now for a conversation you just cannot miss!

About the Author: GREGG HURWITZ is the New York Times #1 internationally bestselling author of 24 thrillers including the Orphan X series. His novels have won numerous literary awards and have been published in 33 languages. Gregg currently serves as the Co-President of International Thriller Writers (ITW). Additionally, he’s written screenplays and television scripts for many of the major studios and networks, comics for AWA (including the critically acclaimed anthology NewThink), DC, and Marvel, and poetry. Currently, Gregg is actively working against polarization in politics and culture. To that end, he's penned op-eds for The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Bulwark, Salon, and others, and has produced several hundred commercials and creative content which have gotten several hundred million views on digital TV platforms. He also helped write the opening ceremony of the 2022 World Cup.

"Radio Golf" is August Wilson’s last play in his famous American Century Cycle. It is a fast-paced, dynamic and wonderfully funny play about the world today and the dreams we have for the future. Set in Pittsburgh in the late 1990s, it’s the story of a successful entrepreneur who aspires to become the city’s first Black mayor. On the verge of an almost-guaranteed win, he finds his identity shaken when his morals and ideals are questioned by those around him. Ultimately, he must recognize what the price of his success is and decide whether he is willing to pay it. Directed by Rae Janeil, auditions for 5 roles are coming up Feb. 23 & 24.

Shows are at the theatre on Route 25, next to Brookfield Library, on April 25 thru May 10 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Reserved seating tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors 65 and older.

Country Music Hall of Famer, five-time Grammy-winner, and AMA Lifetime Achievement honoree Marty Stuart picks up where he left off on Altitude, his first new album in five years, exploring a cosmic country landscape populated by dreamers and drifters, misfits and angels, honky-tonk heroes and lonesome lovers. There’s a desert flare to the music here, a sweeping, spacious feel that conjures up wide-open horizons and endless stretches of two-lane highway, and the production is raw and cinematic to match, tipping its cap both to Bakersfield and Laurel Canyon as it balances jangle and twang in equal measure.

While it would be easy for an artist as accomplished as Stuart to rest on his laurels, Altitude instead showcases the work of a searcher with an insatiable appetite for growth and reflection, one whose ambition, much like his keen wit and rich imagination, only seems to grow with each and every release.

The Hickory Stick Bookshop is delighted to welcome editor Graydon Carter, who will be in conversation with author Lisa Taddeo about his new book “When The Going Was Good”. This event, which will include a book signing, will take place on Sunday April 27th at 2.00 pm at The Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens in Washington Depot.

ABOUT THE BOOK

From the pages of Vanity Fair to the red carpets of Hollywood, editor Graydon Carter's memoir revives the glamorous heyday of print magazines when they were at the vanguard of American culture.

When Graydon Carter was offered the editorship of Vanity Fair in 1992, he knew he faced an uphill battle--how to make the esteemed and long-established magazine his own. With curiosity, fearlessness, and a love of recent history and glamour that would come to define his storied career in magazines, Carter succeeded in endearing himself to his editors, contributors, and readers, as well as many of the faces that would come to appear in Vanity Fair's pages. He went on to run the magazine with overwhelming success for the next two and a half decades.

Filled with colorful memories and intimate details, “When the Going Was Good” is Graydon Carter's lively recounting of how he made his mark as one of the most talented editors in the business. With his inimitable voice and signature quip, he brings readers to lunches and dinners with the great and good of America, Britain, and Europe. He assembled one of the most formidable stables of writers and photographers under one roof, and here he re-creates in real time the steps he took to ensure Vanity Fair cemented its place as the epicenter of art, culture, business, and politics, even as digital media took hold. Charming, candid, and brimming with stories, “When the Going Was Good” perfectly captures the last golden age of print magazines from the inside out.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Graydon Carter is the founder of Air Mail. Before this, he was a staff writer for both Time and Life. He cocreated Spy, edited The New York Observer, and for twenty-five years was the award-winning editor of Vanity Fair. Carter further planted a flag in Los Angeles with the legendary Vanity Fair Oscar party. He is also the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning producer of more than a dozen documentaries and one hit Broadway play. He and his wife live in Greenwich Village and Connecticut.

Lisa Taddeo is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller “Three Women”, which she adapted as a dramatic series on Starz, the novel “Animal”, and the short story collection “Ghost Lover”. She has contributed to The New York Times, New York magazine, Esquire, Elle, Glamour, and many other publications. Her nonfiction has been included in the Best American Sports Writing and Best American Political Writing anthologies, and her short stories have won two Pushcart Prizes. She lives with her husband and daughter in Connecticut.

This event is free and open to the public. If you are unable to attend this event, you may reserve signed copies of “When The Going Was Good” by calling The Hickory Stick Bookshop at (860) 868 0525, or shop our website 24/7 at www.hickorystickbookshop.com.

The Correspondence between President Thomas Jefferson and Senator Elijah Boardman (of New Milford) and its Relevance to Today’s Middle East Debates

The legendary lawyer, professor, and public intellectual Alan Dershowitz will discuss the interrelated themes of two of his (more than 50) books, one with special resonance for New Milford, and the other with special resonance for the ongoing Middle East conflict.

The 2008 book, Finding Jefferson: A Lost Letter, A Remarkable Discovery, and the First Amendment in an Age of Terrorism, discusses a long-lost letter from Thomas Jefferson to New Milford’s own Elijah Boardman, of a founding New Milford family. Written on July 3, 1801, the letter contains Jefferson’s only published discussion of a key free speech issue that is especially relevant now: when the government may restrict speech for fear that it could lead to terrorism. Alan Dershowitz, who is a passionate collector of historical memorabilia and a passionate Jefferson scholar, acquired the letter from a New York bookstore in 2006, prompting him to write this book. The Jefferson letter has special significance for New Milford not only because its addressee was Elijah Boardman, but also because its subject was a famous sermon that had been delivered in 1800 by the Reverend Stanley Griswold, the pastor of New Milford’s First Congregational Church, and later a U.S. Senator from Ohio.

The 2024 book, The Ten Big Anti-Israel Lies and How to Refute Them with Truth, carries forward the themes of how best to protect both free speech and safety to today’s fierce debates about the Middle East, presenting Professor Dershowitz’s views about how these debates have gone wrong.

In the spirit of Jefferson’s disagreements with his New Milford correspondents, Professor Dershowitz welcomes a lively discussion.

__

Alan Dershowitz has been teaching, litigating and writing about law and policy for more than 60 years. He has written 55 books and more than 1000 articles. Many of today’s leaders around the world are among the 10,000 students he has taught. He has represented and advised presidents, prime ministers and business leaders.

Called “The world’s best-known lawyer” and its most prominent defender of civil liberties, he has litigated and won hundreds of cases in multiple countries. He has received numerous honorary degrees, medals and other honors for his work. One such honor was bestowed on him by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel who said: “If there had been a few people like Alan Dershowitz during the 1930s and 1940s, the history of European Jewry might have been different.”

Most of his cases and causes have been pro bono, including his defense of dissidents, such as Anatoly Sharansky, Vaclav Havel, and Julian Assange. Dershowitz graduated first in his class at Yale Law School and was the editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Journal. He taught at Harvard for 50 years, where he offered courses on multiple issues, ranging from criminal, constitutional, family and Jewish laws, as well as psychiatry, neurobiology, mathematics, literature, philosophy and even baseball. His primary academic interest has been on prediction and prevention of harmful conduct – a course he developed and taught during most of his career. Philosophically, he considers himself a libertarian, egalitarian and contrarian.

At age 86, he continues to write and consult, while spending more time with Carolyn, his wife of 39 years, and his three children and two grandchildren.

__

President William Jefferson Clinton

“Alan Dershowitz found an important letter from his hero that relates to freedom of speech,

incitement, and terrorism – subjects about which Alan has thought and taught for decades. This

book is a wonderful adventure story that uses Jefferson’s arguments and Dershowitz’s counters

to illuminate issues that were important and difficult when the U.S. was a new nation and that

remain so today. I recommend it to every citizen concerned with preserving our liberties and

combating terrorism.”

David McCullough, historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author

“The 1801 letter of Thomas Jefferson to Elijah Boardman is of tremendous interest and

importance, as is the remarkable story of its discovery by Alan Dershowitz.”

Doris Kearns Goodwin, historian and prize-winning author

“Finding Jefferson is terrific on every level: as a memoir of a passionate collector, it is

delightful; as an account of an important historical discovery, it is riveting; as a defense of free

speech, it is brilliant.”

Ken Burns, director and producer of multiple award-winning films, including Thomas Jefferson

“What a treasure this book is, just like the stuff Dershowitz scours the old archives for. It is

unexpected, revealing and resonant with a central fact of our Republic – we are still stitched

together by words, and their complicated progeny, ideas. From a simple, fortuitous discovery,

Dershowitz has fashioned an elaborate and engaging argument, one we will be thinking about for ages.

Calling all young writers! Muse Squad, a premier creative writing program, is thrilled to bring its inspiring literature-based classes to the Ridgefield Parks & Recreation Center this spring. Jerry Vivino - Saxophones & Vocals

Jerry toured the country with Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons in 1978 and 1979. Jerry did not want to continue with lengthy tours, and wanted to make a living in New York, so he got off the road and started working steadily in the tri-state area. Jingle work and show work quickly followed. Jerry found himself working with Joan Rivers, Rodney Dangerfield, Tony Bennett and Ray Charles, to name a few. Jerry played in the band in many Broadway shows, including Leader of the Pack, Annie, A Chorus Line, Cats, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Starlight Express, Just Once, Groucho and Grease.

In 1989 Jerry was asked if he would play on a record with a relatively unknown band called Killer Joe. It was started by Joe Delia and Max Weinberg, who decided to contact a few session musicians in the NY area to form the group. A recording was released in 1990 and even though the project never really got off the ground, this is how Max Weinberg got to know Jerry.

In 1993, when Max was asked if he would put together a band for a late night talk show, he contacted Jerry to find out if he would like to audition for Late Night With Conan O'Brien. At that time, Jerry and his brother Jimmy were both playing with Donald Fagen and New York Nights, and were on the verge of making a commitment to the first Steely Dan Reunion tour. More than a few people thought they made the wrong decision, passing on a great opportunity to tour with Fagan and Becker for just the slim possibility of a TV show. Yet, Jerry eagerly agreed to the audition, and as it turned out, the Steely Dan Reunion tour only lasted five weeks! Jerry can still be heard nightly, playing in the Max Weinberg 7 on NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

If you don't know Jerry personally, you certainly have heard him play. Featured on countless recordings, TV commercials and movie soundtracks, his resume reads like a Who's Who In Entertainment. Jerry has played with Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Son Seals, Paul Shaffer, Frankie Valli, Al Kooper, Dion, James Brown, Phoebe Snow, Donald Fagen, Dr. John, Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis and the legendary Keely Smith, to name just a few.

Recordings for ESPN, Oreo cookies, Charmin and Wendy's head the list of advertisement (or jingle) work. Jerry has also played on many movie soundtracks, including such recent films as Maid in Manhattan, Auto-Focus, The Tao of Steve and the Sundance Official Selection for 2003, Camp. Jerry plays tenor, alto, soprano, baritone and bass saxophones, b-flat, e-flat and bass clarinets, flute, alto flute, bass flute, piccolo, ocarina, recorder and Irish penny whistle.

Jerry's true passion in music is Jazz and R&B. In addition to being a member of the Max Weinberg 7, he can be heard playing with his brother Jimmy in the Vivino Brothers Band. He also is the leader of a really fun group with bass player Mike Merritt, drummer James Wormworth, keyboard player Brian Charrette and frequent guests, trumpet player Lew Soloff and guitarist Melvin Sparks.

Jerry's saxophone influences include Ben Webster, John Coltrane, King Curtis, Johnny Hodges, Cannonball Adderly, Michael Brecker, Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon. Clarinet influences include Benny Goodman, Buddy deFranco, Aker Bilk, Pete Fountain, Sidney Bechet and Eddie Daniels. Flute influences include Jean Pierre Rampal, Hubert Laws, James Galway and Ian Anderson. However, Jerry's favorite musician is his wife, flutist Laura (Renino) Vivino.

Meet The Band:

Rick Savage - Trumpet - Rick brings a sound & soul to jazz not commonly heard today. Deeply rooted in the "sound & soul" of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard & Woody Shaw, Rick heard them all live many times & soaked it all in. Some of the great artists that Rick has performed/recorded with include; Tania Maria, Jack McDuff, Nancy Wilson, Tony Bennett, Gerry Mulligan, Mel Lewis, Toshiko Aikioshi, Warne Marsh, Eliot Zigmund, Randy Brecker, Anthony Jackson, Nestor Torres.

Rave Tesar - Keyboardist, Composer, Producer, Engineer - Growing up in a musical household, Rave began playing piano at an early age, and developed an affinity for all styles of music. He began his career working on the Jazz scene in and around New York with numerous groups and leaders. His reputation soon led to national and international tours as a side man with singer Frankie Randal, rock and roll hall-of-famers "The Shirells" and the minimalist pop group "Tirez Tirez", led by Mikel Rouse. Rave is, perhaps, best known for his long-standing collaboration with singer Annie Haslam and her progressive rock band "Renaissance". Serving as a co-writer and producer, Rave worked on several of Haslam's solo projects as well as the 2001 Renaissance "live" from Japan CD, "The Land of the Rising Sun", and the most recent Renaissance studio album, "Grandine il Vento", on which he also served as primary producer.

In addition to his work in jazz and pop music, Rave has written and recorded numerous works for film and television. He is also an educator, and is featured as such in the public television series, "Exploring the World of Music". Currently, Rave is finishing up his third CD with the Rave Tesar Trio, following the success of the albums "You Decide" and "Defragment Now". The trio has received high critical praise, with "You Decide" having been presented as one of the favorite piano trio releases of 2008 by several jazz critics. The trio includes bassist Kermit Driscoll and Rave's brother, Bill Tesar, on drums.

Drummer - Warren Odze - Warren has performed with some of biggest names in the biz including Woody Herman and Judy Collins and played in countless b’way shows spanning decades from Chorus Line to Shrek, and Chicago to King Kong to name a few. He is known as a 1st call NYC B’way show drummer.
