Call for submissions! ASAP!’s annual Celebration of Young Photographers invites students in grades 6-12 to submit their photographs for a chance to participate in a juried art exhibition. A panel of professional photographers selects 60 photos for this public exhibition, recognizing the top four photos and their photographers for their outstanding and thoughtful work based on the yearly theme.

This year’s theme is Grace. Grace has many definitions, a few examples are: smoothness and elegance of movement, a divinely given talent or blessing, a short prayer of thanks said before a meal, or a recognition of humanity. What do you think of when you hear the word grace, and how will you capture its essence in your image?

The Ridgefield Library is pleased to host a new solo art show by painter Wendy Moore in the Lower Level Art Gallery beginning in September. More Than Meets the Eye will be on exhibit from September 10th – October 9th during regular Library hours. Stop by and meet Wendy and enjoy refreshments at an artist’s reception from 2:00-4:00 PM on Saturday, September 14th!

Wendy Moore grew up in the San Francisco Bay area in a home filled with art and music. Her passion for drawing was nurtured as soon as she could hold a pencil and brush. She spent playtimes exploring the garden and surrounding Oakland hills, and every evening experienced the joy of watching the sky as the sun set over the Pacific behind Mt. Tamalpais across the bay. The glow of late afternoon is still her favorite time to paint. Her luminous paintings often focus on marshes, seascapes, cloudscapes, landscapes and still lifes.

“I paint what sparks a thrill of discovery within me– and I try to record on canvas the visceral response that made me want to paint this in the first place! The thrill, quiet rush, or joy itself– rather than an idea or emotional message. I find these encounters with more than meets the eye painting in the present, from life, the naturally lit landscape, still life or portrait.”

Are you funny? Do you love improv? Have you been meaning to get back to it? Is taking an improv class on your bucket list? Here is your chance! The Theater Barn is offering a 6-week-long Fundamentals of Improv Comedy Workshop.

Taught by Upright Citizen’s Brigade-trained improviser and performer Matt Austin, this six-week workshop is designed to dig deep into the fundamentals of improv, helping you learn techniques to think quickly on your feet and generally be more creative and confident. Students will learn both long-form and short-form improv techniques. While the emphasis in teaching will be on having fun over achieving perfection, students can expect a class, not just games. This workshop will culminate in a ‘Whose Barn Is It Anyway’-style class show performed in the new Black Box Theater.

Are you interested but not sure if this is the workshop for you? Sign up for our trial class on August 3rd. Afterward, if you decide to register for the 6-week workshop, your $20 trial class fee will be applied as a credit!

Space is extremely limited and those wishing to register (the cost is $400/person) are urged to do so as soon as possible via the Barn website www.ridgefieldtheaterbarn.org

August 17 – November 3, 2024 · Wed. - Sun., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Carriage Barn

Included with site admission

Our award-winning exhibition and program series, #HandsOnHistory, is back for another year of interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.

From sheep to wool. From flax to linen. From mulberry to silk. Until the mid-19th century and the rise of the industrialized textile factory, many Ridgefielders were creating textiles within the community: cultivating raw materials, weaving fabric to use in clothing, housewares, and decoration, and everything in between. This exhibition highlights the production of the three types of textile fibers commonly produced in Ridgefield and the surrounding region - linen, wool, and silk - from the field to the finished fabric.

Discover new ways of thinking about textile history through STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities woven throughout the exhibition! Learn about the chemistry of dyes, the geometry of textiles, and the algorithms of quilts and coverlets with interactives that are fun and educational for visitors of all ages. Hands-on activities include carding wool, spinning fibers, dying fabric with natural dyes, and replicating and creating patterns for weaving and embroidery.

Participate in our Community Quilting Project! Signature quilts became popular in the 19th century as mementos and keepsakes from community gatherings, or as gifts for weddings or when families moved west. Each block was made and signed by community and/or family members. Visitors to #HandsOnHistory can add a quilt block to KTM&HC's signature quilt, with a message or signature as a record of everyone who visited the exhibition.

Thanks to our generous sponsors, site admission - including exhibit access - on Sundays in October and early November are FREE! Also included on select Sundays: family demonstrations, where local experts and skilled tradespeople will discuss textile-related topics such as 18th-century weaving, flax processing, Native American textiles, weaving in contemporary art, sheep rearing, and natural dye-making. Individual demonstration dates are listed on our website calendar.

Anonymous Society is excited to present Parallel Play, a captivating two-woman art show featuring the works of Linda Colletta and Jennifer Caviola. Running from September 5 through October 19, 2024, this exhibition highlights the dynamic interplay between the artists’ distinct yet complementary styles, united by their innovative use of color and grid structures.

Parallel Play delves into the artists’ shared exploration of abstract space through the medium of paint. Both Colletta and Caviola masterfully layer paint to build rich, textured surfaces, which they then deconstruct and develop into striking geometric compositions. Colletta’s intricate grid-based patterns reveal deep, textural complexity, while Caviola’s bold geometric designs present a crisp, impactful clarity. Their parallel approaches—marked by skillful manipulation of color and form—create a dynamic visual conversation that invites viewers to engage with their individual and collective artistic expressions.

Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, September 7, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, to meet the artists and experience the vibrant dialogue of Parallel Play. This event is a wonderful opportunity to explore the intersection of abstract art and geometric precision in a lively and engaging atmosphere.

The exhibit will be open September 5 through Thursdays and Fridays from 12-5 pm, Saturdays from 10 am-2 pm, or by appointment.

August 17 – November 3, 2024 · Wed. - Sun., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A Collaboration with Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra

September 14, 2024 · 7 p.m.

KTM&HC Garden House

$25/adult; $10/students

Purchase Tickets

Heritage in Motion is an annual music- and history-based collaborative event between KTM&HC and the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra. This year, the program will explore the part music plays in identity, promote cultural awareness, and celebrate humanity with a featured performance by exceptional musicians The Bardin-Niskala Duo.

Tickets are on sale now and are anticipated to sell out - reserve your seats today!

The Bardin-Niskala Duo is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to using classical music to explore identity, fight racism, promote cultural awareness, and celebrate humanity during this time of division and racial violence. They perform cello and piano works by under-represented and historically marginalized composers, and their Commissioning Project asks ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, and Native American) composers to write them pieces that incorporate folksongs and children's songs of the composer's particular cultures. Through these commissions and the performances of these works, they promote these composers and open dialogue with and amongst audience members on the notions of homeland, community, and belonging, on the complexity and uniqueness of various cultures, and on the challenges of navigating life in this country as a bi-cultural, multi-cultural, or minority person.

Cellist An-Lin Bardin and pianist Naomi Niskala met while living and teaching in New Haven, CT, shortly after they finished their studies at the Yale School of Music. An-Lin is of Chinese-American heritage and Naomi is of Japanese-American heritage. They have been playing together in their piano trio (Trio Kisosen) since 2016, and formed the Bardin-Niskala Duo in January 2021 in response to the sharp rise in anti-Asian violence and hate crimes across the United States.

A music and history-based collaborative event held at Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center, this program will feature a performance by exceptional musicians, the Bardin-Niskala Duo, designed to explore the part music plays in identity, promote cultural awareness, and celebrate humanity.

The duo will present pieces that deal with historical events in the United States that are not often spoken about–Stories of how the US government approaches and interacts with indigenous cultures (both Navajo and Hawaiian), specific ethnicities (the internment of Japanese people and communities during WWII, and the disparate treatment of Blacks in the US), and immigration issues (Venezuelan humanitarian situation). None of these stories will be presented from a political standpoint. Rather, the artists will use music to explore the ongoing stories and impact created by these historical events–decisions which continue to resonate through today’s generations and which shape our cultural and societal attitudes.

The duo is comprised of cellist An-Lin Bardin and pianist Naomi Niskala. An-Lin and Naomi met while living and teaching in New Haven, CT, shortly after they finished their studies at the Yale School of Music.

Tories, Spies and Traitors: Divided Loyalty in Revolutionary Connecticut presented by Annie O’Brien from the Connecticut Historical Society. Which side are you on? That was the question that every single person in Connecticut had to answer in 1775, as the thirteen colonies began a rebellion against British rule. Loyalty was not only a matter of words or opinion. For soldiers and civilians alike, loyalty could mean loss of fortune, of friends and even of life. This presentation reveals stories—some well known, some obscure—of Nutmeggers who risked and sacrificed to support their chosen side. Newtown Historical Society program.

Join us for a book talk and signing by author and historian Marty Podskoch. His book, The Connecticut 169 Club: Your Passport and Guide to Exploring Connecticut, encourages travelers to visit all of the towns and villages of our beautiful and unique state.

Podskoch created this book to be a guide and a passport. He found someone from each town to write a short description highlighting their town’s location, history, and interesting places to visit. The book has a space for travelers to journal about their experiences and a place to get the book stamped or signed by a resident or business. Travelers will get to know the locals and perhaps learn about a good place to eat or an interesting local attraction and learn a lot about Connecticut and its residents in the process.  People who visit all 169 towns will receive the “Leatherman Award” patch at a luncheon or dinner held at a different town each year. The award is named after the vagabond who lived in caves and traveled a route regularly (approx. 34 days) from the Connecticut River to the Hudson River during the late 1800s.

Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Thank you to our generous sponsors:

Grashow at The Granite: The Cathedral

One Night Only Artistic Celebration

The Granite is excited to present Grashow at The Granite: The Cathedral, an extraordinary celebration of the acclaimed artist’s journey through sculpture, highlighting James Grashow’s magnum opus The Cathedral.

The heart of this event, The Cathedral, depicts Jesus Christ bearing the weight of an ornately carved Renaissance-era cathedral on his back, while a tangle of demons claw at him from below. This evocative piece offers a unique perspective on the themes of man, nature, and mortality.

Adjacent to The Cathedral – in the magnificent vaulted Granite sanctuary – the brilliance of Jimmy’s World will be on full, glorious display. His unmatched ability to transform cardboard and wood into monumental works of art will come to life, ever-challenging traditional ideas of sculpture and inspiring all to see beyond the conventional.

Grashow at The Granite: The Cathedral showcases Jimmy’s evolution, from his early woodcuts and sculptures, delicate houseplants and birds, to his latest awe-inspiring creations. The complete exhibition is a vibrant exploration of the artist’s obsession with fragility and mortality.

The Cathedral is on view for one night only on Thursday, September 19 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

RSVP Today!

In partnership with InSitu.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

James Grashow (b.1942) is an American artist who established himself early in his career, doing woodcuts and engravings for album covers and major publications. He is best known, however, for his creative genius working with cardboard. Grashow’s cardboard creations include large-scale installations such as fountains and menageries; smaller, elaborate cities and buildings amid flowers and leaves (Houseplants); and exquisitely detailed birds (Cardbirds). His works have been exhibited in museums and galleries across the country since the 1960s.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Grashow earned his BFA from Pratt Institute. After graduation, he spent a year in Florence, Italy on a Fulbright Travel Grant for painting and graphics. Upon returning to the United States he continued his studies at Pratt and was awarded an MFA in 1965. Grashow made a name for himself creating woodcuts and engravings for album covers and major publications, including Rolling Stone magazine. One of his most memorable album covers, Stand Up, was made in 1969 for Jethro Tull.

Grashow’s enthusiasm for the sculptures he cuts and shapes from wood, cardboard, and paper-mâché is evident in the sheer volume of his various creations and his natural ability to teach his art. He has taught at Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design in New York, Fairfield University in Connecticut, and at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation in Colorado. He has received numerous awards and recognition from the Society of Illustrators, Art Directors Club, and American Institute of Graphics Arts. Grashow lives and works in Redding, Connecticut. He and his wife have two children and five grandchildren.

Anya Liftig grew up with a foot in two very different worlds: While her mother’s

upbringing was so rural that the other kids called her “holler rat,” her father came from a comfortable, upper-middle-class Jewish family. Liftig spent school years in affluent Connecticut and summers in the holler. Shaped by the experience, she would go on to win a scholarship to Yale and become an acclaimed artist, using provocative performances to explore the contradictions and unanswered questions of her life. But when the world Liftig was building for herself shattered, she was forced to reconcile where she’d come from with who she was and who she wanted to be.

In Holler Rat, Liftig masterfully interweaves family lore from her Appalachian childhood with her performance art pieces and scenes of the yearlong period in which her life fell apart and plumbs the cathartic self-reckoning that followed. She takes us from her Mamaw’s porch to Yale, from the site of a violent family land feud to a pre-gentrified Bushwick loft, and from a devastating childhood leg injury to having 243 raw eggs pelted at her in the name of art. In visceral,

beautiful prose that ranges from raunchy and outrageous to sobering and tragic, Holler Rat is the origin story of an unconventional artistic life and a captivating account of the stumbling blocks, sacrifices, and discoveries along the way.

August 17 – November 3, 2024 · Wed. - Sun., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
