At #HandsOnHistory Family Demonstrations, local experts and skilled tradespeople will discuss textile-related topics such as 18th-century weaving, flax processing, Native American textiles, weaving in contemporary art, sheep rearing, and natural dye-making.
Did you know that the word "moccasin" comes from the Algonkian word meaning shoe or footwear? On October 20, Darlene Kascak, Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, Education Director for the Institute for American Indian Studies, will talk about the use of leather (tanned animal hides) in Indigenous American clothing and will demonstrate traditional moccasin making. Traditional Indigenous American clothing varies widely from tribe to tribe, but one nearly universal element has been the moccasin, a sturdy slipped-shaped type of shoe sewn from leather.
Family Demonstrations are FREE for all visitors as part of free site admission on Sundays from October 6 through November 3. As part of free site admission, visitors can also take a 30-minute Highlights tour of the historic tavern museum.
