Ocean In Space | Julie Durkin Marty

Georgetown, CT — G-Town Arts is pleased to present Ocean in Space, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Julie Durkin Marty, curated by Katerina Lanfranco, artist, curator, and founder of Rhombus Space in Brooklyn. She was also the chief curator at Trestle Gallery also in Brooklyn. This immersive exhibition conjures a visual language at the edge of recognition, where gestural abstraction meets speculative mapping. The show opens Saturday, September 13, with a reception from 4 to 6 PM, and runs through October 18th, 2025.

In Ocean in Space, Durkin Marty explores the psychic overlap between interior states and environmental systems. She builds paintings through accretions of mark, color, and spatial interference, thinking through sediment, pressure, and weather. Influenced by the seafloor and outer space, storm charts, and other visual tools we use to try to locate ourselves, the paintings resist clarity. They behave more like atmospheres than images—charged, unstable fields that hover between legibility and collapse. Each work suggests an urgent, poetic effort to situate oneself within a world that is continuously shifting—environmentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Julie Durkin Marty was born in Pennsylvania and lives and works in Redding, Connecticut. She received her MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University, and her BFA from Parsons School of Design. Her work has been exhibited at venues such as DADA POST, G-Town Arts, Holland Tunnel Gallery, Mulry Fine Art, GBG Gallery, among others. Durkin Marty is also a curator committed to fostering community through collaborative and interdisciplinary practices.

Ocean in Space is her first solo exhibition at G-Town Arts.
