As part of Poetry in the Garden's 2025 season, "Declarations 2025 - Resilience & Rage: Voices from Marginalized America," KTM&HC and Ridgefield Poet Laureate Emerita Barb Jennes are proud to host a series of poetry workshops in the month of July. Participants can learn, discuss, and create with some of the country's most prominent poetic voices.

On Monday, July 21, ground-breaking poet Mark Doty's workshop will focus on the challenges and opportunities presented by being ourselves on the page. From Mark: "A deep paradox in American poetry lies in the fact that while LGBTQ+ individuals are generally thought of as outsiders, a glance at a list of major American poets - Whitman, Dickinson, Crane, Bishop, O'Hara, Swenson, Rich, Ashbery, and many more - reveals that we're an extraordinary mainstream. This tension is actually fruitful." Includes discussion and short writing exercises.

Workshops are open to writers of all experience levels/genres. Registration is limited to 25 participants per workshop, so reserve your spot early!

Tickets go on sale this spring. Special discounted rates are available for high school and college students - inquire at info@keelertavernmuseum.org.

Declarations 2025 - LGBTQ+ Voices

July 21, 2025 · 7 p.m.

Walled Garden

Free

Commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with "Poetry in the Garden: Declarations 2025." Each Monday evening in July, nationally acclaimed poets will share works that explore how historically marginalized groups have been denied the Declaration of Independence's promise of equality and inalienable rights.

On July 21, we are proud to host two poets whose work explores the marginalization, expression, and resilience of LGBTQ+ Americans: Mark Doty—a National Book Award winner—and award-winning poet Trace Peterson. The winners of a poetry contest co-sponsored by Ridgefield PRIDE will also be presented. A Q&A session and book signing will follow.

Free for all! Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the readings, held in KTM&HC’s beautiful walled garden. A Q&A session will follow each reading; poets’ books will be available for signing. In the event of inclement weather, the reading will move inside the Garden House.

Mark Doty is the author of nine books of poetry, including Deep LaneFire to Fire: New & Selected Poems—winner of the 2008 National Book Award—and My Alexandria, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the T.S. Eliot Prize. The author of four best-selling memoirs, Doty has received two NEA fellowships, Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundation Fellowships, a Lila Wallace/Readers Digest Award, and the Witter Byner Prize. He has taught at the University of Iowa, Princeton University, Sarah Lawrence College, Columbia University, Cornell, and NYU. In 2011, Doty was elected a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.

Trace Peterson's new collection The Valleys Are So Lush and Steep won the 2024 Alma Book Award from Saturnalia Books and is forthcoming this fall. Her first book, Since I Moved In, won the Gil Ott Award. Peterson co-edited the first-ever anthology of trans poetry Troubling the Line: Trans and Genderqueer Poetry and Poetics, a Finalist for a Lamda Literary Award. She is also editor of the small press EOAGH, winner of two Lamda Literary Awards and a National Jewish Book Award. Currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of English at UConn, Peterson has also taught at Yale, Emory, Hunter College, and the Jack Kerouac School at Naropa.

On Monday, July 28, award-winning poet Danez Smith's workshop will focus on poetry and time. From Danez: "Since the beginning of time we've been obsessed with time. How does it move? How are we held within it? How can we move in and out of it? In this workshop we'll read a sampling of poets going forward, backwards, and deeper into time before designing our own machines (hint: it's poems) that will move us across the timeline to discover what waits for us and our ambitions if we dive into the stream and let it carry us further into our imaginations."

Workshops are open to writers of all experience levels/genres. Registration is limited to 25 participants per workshop, so reserve your spot early!

Tickets go on sale this spring. Special discounted rates are available for high school and college students - inquire at info@keelertavernmuseum.org.

The Rough & Tumble are a folk/Americana duo, consisting of Mallory Graham & Scott Tyler. Forming in 2011, they spent 8 years full time in a 16ft camper with two big dogs, playing roughly 150 shows a year. At home at festivals, listening rooms, and house concerts across the country, their commanding stage presence, engaging performances and affecting songwriting won them official showcases at Folk Alliance International, NERFA, SERFA and the Independent Music Awards Americana Song of the Year for their song “The Hardest Part".

In 2023 they received recognition for their work in New England as recipients of Club Passim's Iguana Music Fund. Only This Far, the band's most notable work, was released in 2023 and has been described as "quality songs, well written, well played, well sung and arranged, and a pleasure from start to end." In November 2024, The Rough & Tumble released Hymns For My Atheist Sister and Her Friends To Sing Along To, a collection of deeply personal, unifying and uplifting, humanist gospel songs.

Born at the Sherman Song Swap nearly 20 years ago, The Red Dirt Girls (RDG) are all about harmonies. Inspired by the classic trio work of Emmy Lou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton, as well as Red Molly and the Wailin’ Jennys, these neighbors got together for the sheer joy of singing. Susy Marker and Missy Alexander trade off on the lead vocals and high harmonies. They are the songwriters of the group, crafting lyrics that are sometimes poignant, sometimes funny, and often both. Pat Walker is the chief arranger, with a perfect ear, a passion for the unexpected, and a smoky bass line. Best described as Americana (a blend of country & folk), their repertoire is an eclectic mix of original music and unexpected covers. Whether singing around the kitchen table or on local stages, this trio of friends aspires to share the magic that a perfect chord creates.

When "M. Butterfly" by David Henry Hwang premiered in 1988, its remarkable story of international espionage and personal betrayal solidified its status as a modern classic. Based on the real-life affair between a French diplomat and a mysterious Chinese opera singer, it blurred the boundaries between male and female, East and West. For the 2017 Broadway Revival Version, Hwang has incorporated new material inspired by details of the relationship that have emerged since the play first seduced audiences. This intoxicating reimagining of M. BUTTERFLY examines the nature of love and the devastating cost of deceit. The play will be directed by Lou Okell. Auditions for 2 dancers, 2 men, and 3 women will be held June 8 & 9. The role of Song Liling will be played by Todd Santa Maria and Miles Everett will play the role of René Gallimard (content warning: nudity, suicide).

Shows are at the theatre on Route 25, next to Brookfield Library, on Sept. 12 thru Sept. 27 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Reserved seating tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors 65 and older. They are available online at www.BrookfieldTheatre.org or at the box office. There will also be a free preview on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. for area senior citizens.

Brookfield Theatre's 2025 Season is made possible with the support of the Department of Economic and Community Development, Office of Arts; Support has also been provided to Brookield Theatre from CT Humanities (CTH), with funding provided by the Connecticut State Department of Economic and Community Development/Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) from the Connecticut State Legislature; Along with the generous donations of our many supporters and subscribers.

Do you know the stories of how your ancestors came to America? What about the ones left behind? NOTES TO THE MOTHERLAND is a spellbinding psychological thriller that unearths the hidden experiences of Paul Rajeckas’ family during WWII, turning one son’s search for his immigrant past into a gripping theatrical journey.

Playing a multitude of characters in this riveting one-man show, Rajeckas blends physical theater with a darkly incisive portrait of the 21st-century immigrant experience. This transformative performance brings the audience center stage into a powerful exploration of identity, history, and the secrets that shape us—an unmissable experience for anyone seeking to understand who we are and how we got here.

Michael Ford's compositional and improvisational style draws on many influences, but it is rooted in a classical music aesthetic that stems from a life dedicated to the piano.

Ford describe his music as having hints of impressionism, progressive rock, jazz and Americana. He loves a good melody and enjoys rhythmic explorations. His music ranges from sadness to jubilant.

Expressing Motherhood is a gathering of voices and stories all about the journey of motherhood. Since 2008 #ExMoShow has showcased women (and men) sharing their personal stories on stage. Initially created and produced in Los Angeles by “two moms who had never done anything like it before.” Since, Expressing Motherhood has been taken on the road to an Off-Off-Broadway theater in New York City and to numerous other cities from Boston to Tacoma.

The Merryall Center is thrilled to be its next stop in bringing these stories to our stage for our Litchfield County community. It’s an opportunity to share with one another in spoken word, monologue, skit, or song all the nuances and experiences that are forever attached to motherhood.

To find out more information, see Merryall Center’s Call for Submission and visit Expressing Motherhood
