Caroline and Nancy sing as the duo "The Girls from Away", and have been working and singing together for years. They love to explore the rich musical heritage and connections between the British Isles and Americas through their songs and rich harmonies. They perform locally and really enjoy researching and sharing traditional songs as well as writing their own. They have produced and performed programs such as "From Maritimes to Mountains - The Songs of the Eastern Seaboard from Newfoundland to the Carolinas" and the upcoming "Songs for the Women".
Caroline has loved to sing since before she could speak. She is an award-winning, published poet who writes in Scottish Gaelic and has been featured in programs on the BBC Radio for her original songwriting. She also loves to spin, weave, celebrate nature, and travel. Her songs can be found at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-tYC3-HEgufl445tmzm4QQ.
Nancy began playing guitar and singing in church at the age of 13. It was the music of
John Denver that inspired her to branch out from Christian worship songs to folk music. She has also written songs about family and the New England coast. Nancy’s other interests include walks in the country, kayaking, visiting Maine, and being creative (painting, drawing, decorating). You can find a few of her songs on reverbnation. https://www.reverbnation.com/nancywalsh

As part of Poetry in the Garden's 2025 season, "Declarations 2025 - Resilience & Rage: Voices from Marginalized America," KTM&HC and Ridgefield Poet Laureate Emerita Barb Jennes are proud to host Natasha Gambrell, Tribal Councilor of the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation, one of five recognized tribes in Connecticut.
Gambrell will perform and explain the Eastern Blanket, Jingle, and Northern Traditional dances, among others. The poet/educator often demonstrates these dances at schools, powwows and other public gatherings in order to keep her tribe's rich cultural history alive - a crucial pursuit in the marginalized Indigenous community. "We will not disappear," she explains. "It's up to us to carry the nation on our backs."
A Q&A session suitable for all ages will follow.
Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center is sited on the ancestral homelands of the Ramapough, Munsee Lenape, and Wiechquaesgeck people.
Tickets go on sale this spring, with special pricing for children 12 and under.
Natasha Gambrell is a Tribal Councilor of the Eastern Pequot Nation. A 2015 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University, Gambrell teaches high school English and has been actively involved in the Eastern Pequot archaeology field study since 2008. Passionate about representing her tribe, telling their story, and helping the next generation, Gambrell proudly demonstrates and explains the traditional dances of her people.

Commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with "Poetry in the Garden - Resilience & Rage: Voices from Marginalized America." Each Monday evening in July, nationally acclaimed poets will share works that explore how historically oppressed communities have been denied the Declaration of Independence's promised "inalienable rights."
On July 7, we welcome the voices of Indigenous activists to the ancestral homelands of the Ramapough, Munsee Lenape, and Wiechquaesgeck people. Poets Kimberly Blaeser and Denise Lowe will read from their recent collections. The evening will also include a performance of traditional dance by Eastern Pequot Tribal Councilor Natasha Gambrell. A Q&A session will follow each reading; poets’ books will be available for signing.
Free for all! Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the readings, held in KTM&HC’s beautiful walled garden. In the event of inclement weather, the reading will move inside the Garden House.
Ample parking on-site.
Kimberly Blaeser, past Wisconsin Poet Laureate and founding director of Indigenous Nations Poets, is the author of six poetry collections, most recently Ancient Light and Copper Yearning. Her poetry is widely anthologized and her photographs, picto-poems, and ekphrastic pieces have appeared in landmark exhibitions. She is the 2024 Mackey Chair in Creative Writing at Beloit College, an MFA faculty member for Institute of American Indian Arts, and serves on the Poetry Coalition of the Academy of American Poets. An Anishinaabe activist, Blaeser received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Native Writers’ Circle of the Americas.
Former Kansas Poet Laureate Denise Low is author of House of Grace, House of Blood. Other recent poetry collections include Shadow Light and Casino Bestiary. Low is a founding board member of the Indigenous Nations Poets and former board president of the Associated Writing Programs. For over 25 years, she taught at Haskell Indian Nations University. A literary programmer for Indigenous Voices at The 222 and a professor for Baker University’s School of Professional & Graduate Studies, Low has European and Lenape (Delaware) heritages.

Camelot
As part of Poetry in the Garden's 2025 season, "Declarations 2025 - Resilience & Rage: Voices from Marginalized America," KTM&HC and Ridgefield Poet Laureate Emerita Barb Jennes are proud to host a series of poetry workshops in the month of July. Participants can learn, discuss, and create with some of the country's most prominent poetic voices.
On Monday, July 14, National Book Award winner Martin Espada's workshop will focus on the use of poetry to emphasize with, and advocate on behalf of, immigrants. From Martin: "We'll explore the reality that migrants share a common humanity with us. We'll dig down into our own immigrant histories and search for parallels with contemporary struggles. We'll confront the fact that, historically, the same people others would deport have always done the 'dirty work' in our country. We'll read poems and, not least, we'll write in the garden."
Workshops are open to writers of all experience levels/genres. Registration is limited to 25 participants per workshop, so reserve your spot early!
Tickets go on sale this spring. Special discounted rates are available for high school and college students - inquire at info@keelertavernmuseum.org.

Commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with "Poetry in the Garden: Declarations 2025." Each Monday evening in July, nationally acclaimed poets will share works that explore how historically marginalized groups have been denied the Declaration of Independence's promise of equality and inalienable rights.
On July 14, “Poetry in the Garden: Declarations 2025” welcomes two poets whose work reflects the tenuous experience of immigrants and refugees: National Book Award winner Martin Espada, an outspoken advocate of Latino rights, and Anni Liu, a young poet whose Border Vista was a New York Times Best Poetry Book. A Q&A session and book signing will follow.
Free for all! Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy the readings, held in KTM&HC’s beautiful walled garden. A Q&A session will follow each reading; poets’ books will be available for signing. In the event of inclement weather, the reading will move inside the Garden House.
