Cultural Events in Western Connecticut
"The Saugatuck Cosmology" is an exhibition by Redding photographer Bill Gore that incorporates works that span natural and human-made worlds. There is a palpable sense of flow in Gore’s multi-layered compositions, influenced by the works of painters like Pat Steir, Robert Rauschenberg, Uta Barth and Gerhard Richter.
Gore explores dream-like spaces, and there is a feeling of passing in between aspects of reality. Each layer reveals something otherwise hidden in plain sight. We are simultaneously looking at and through the works, seeing different layers in conversation with each other.
Bill Gore says in his artist statement, "The intent of my lens-based image making is not to represent buildings and trees but to rethink the possibilities for visual expression. I photograph the landscape and return to the studio where images are passed into virtual space, something like a digital bardo."
Bill Gore grew up in Louisiana and seemed always to have a special connection to the natural sciences, the environment, and photography. He studied chemistry in college, received a Ph.D. from Syracuse University, and from there went on to work as a researcher in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and imaging science. For a time, he led a research laboratory at Polaroid and contributed to the development of new photographic media. Bill studied photography with Sandi Haber Fifield and now lives and works in Connecticut. His photographic arts are grounded in the American landscape and search for ways to rethink the possibilities for visual expression. He recently co-authored “The Saugatuck Cosmology” with writer Ted Wade, and this work will be featured in the 2024 Photobook Exhibition at the Griffin Museum. His works are widely exhibited across New England including The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts, The Rowayton Arts Center, The Ridgefield Guild of Artists, The Loft Artists Association, The Shoreline Artists Group, The Carriage Barn Arts Center, and Griffin Museum Lafayette Gallery.

Our award-winning exhibition and program series, #HandsOnHistory, is back for another year of interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.
From sheep to wool. From flax to linen. From mulberry to silk. Until the mid-19th century and the rise of the industrialized textile factory, many Ridgefielders were creating textiles within the community: cultivating raw materials, weaving fabric to use in clothing, housewares, and decoration, and everything in between. This exhibition highlights the production of the three types of textile fibers commonly produced in Ridgefield and the surrounding region - linen, wool, and silk - from the field to the finished fabric.
Discover new ways of thinking about textile history through STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities woven throughout the exhibition! Learn about the chemistry of dyes, the geometry of textiles, and the algorithms of quilts and coverlets with interactives that are fun and educational for visitors of all ages. Hands-on activities include carding wool, spinning fibers, dying fabric with natural dyes, and replicating and creating patterns for weaving and embroidery.
Participate in our Community Quilting Project! Signature quilts became popular in the 19th century as mementos and keepsakes from community gatherings, or as gifts for weddings or when families moved west. Each block was made and signed by community and/or family members. Visitors to #HandsOnHistory can add a quilt block to KTM&HC's signature quilt, with a message or signature as a record of everyone who visited the exhibition.
Thanks to our generous sponsors, site admission - including exhibit access - on Sundays in October and early November are FREE! Also included on select Sundays: family demonstrations, where local experts and skilled tradespeople will discuss textile-related topics such as 18th-century weaving, flax processing, Native American textiles, weaving in contemporary art, sheep rearing, and natural dye-making. Individual demonstration dates are listed on our website calendar.

Anonymous Society is excited to present Parallel Play, a captivating two-woman art show featuring the works of Linda Colletta and Jennifer Caviola. Running from September 5 through October 19, 2024, this exhibition highlights the dynamic interplay between the artists’ distinct yet complementary styles, united by their innovative use of color and grid structures.
Parallel Play delves into the artists’ shared exploration of abstract space through the medium of paint. Both Colletta and Caviola masterfully layer paint to build rich, textured surfaces, which they then deconstruct and develop into striking geometric compositions. Colletta’s intricate grid-based patterns reveal deep, textural complexity, while Caviola’s bold geometric designs present a crisp, impactful clarity. Their parallel approaches—marked by skillful manipulation of color and form—create a dynamic visual conversation that invites viewers to engage with their individual and collective artistic expressions.
Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, September 7, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, to meet the artists and experience the vibrant dialogue of Parallel Play. This event is a wonderful opportunity to explore the intersection of abstract art and geometric precision in a lively and engaging atmosphere.
The exhibit will be open September 5 through Thursdays and Fridays from 12-5 pm, Saturdays from 10 am-2 pm, or by appointment.

The Danbury Museum and The Danbury Music Centre have created a multi-day celebration focused on honoring Charles Ives on the occasion of his 150th birthday, this October 20th, 2024.
Charles Ives, born in Danbury, CT, on October 20, 1874, was influenced by the sights and sounds of Main Street and the surrounding countryside. He used the inspiring blend of hat factory sounds, multilingual peoples, city life and country life, and created internationally renowned compositions that have inspired the American and international musical community for more than 100 years. Ives Week celebrations—all of them free of charge— honor his life, his work, his family, and his legacy. The diverse artists we have performing are interpreting the Ives cannon for the 21st century.
From October 16 through the 20th, there are free walking tours, guided tours of the Charles Ives Birthplace Museum, a graveside gathering, and three very special local, national, and international musical performances. On Friday, October 18, 7pm at Ives Concert Hall, Ives's Complete Violin Sonatas will be performed by William Harvey, violinist and concertmaster of Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, and accompanied by renowned pianist Frederic Chiu.
Sunday, October 20, the 150th anniversary of Ives’s birth, features a 3pm performance by the Danbury Symphony Orchestra at Ives Concert Hall, followed by the grand finale of our celebration, Louise Bessette, Canadian pianist and Latitude 45 recording artist, playing Ives Piano Sonata No. 2 at a 6pm concert.

Concertmaster of Mexico’s premier orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, and violin faculty at the Universidad Panamericana, violinist, conductor, and composer William Harvey has appeared as violin soloist at Carnegie Hall with the New York Youth Symphony and has performed concerti with orchestras in Argentina, the Philippines, Mexico, and USA. His recording of the violin concerto by Hector Infanzón received two nominations to the Latin Grammys in 2021.
Frederic Chiu plays major venues on five continents: Lincoln Center in New York, Le Châtelet in Paris, the Mozarteum in Buenos Aires, and extensive tours in smaller and unusual venues. He collaborates with Classical music friends Joshua Bell, Pierre Amoyal and the St Lawrence String Quartet, as well as non-Classical friends like jazz pianist Bob James or storyteller David Gonzalez, to bring vivid live piano experiences to all audiences. Frederic Chiu recorded the most extensive complete piano works of Prokofiev, and his personal relationship with the Prokofiev family makes him a world-recognized advocate of the composer.

Did you know that the word "moccasin" comes from the Algonkian word meaning shoe or footwear? On October 20, Darlene Kascak, Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, Education Director for the Institute for American Indian Studies, will talk about the use of leather (tanned animal hides) in Indigenous American clothing and will demonstrate traditional moccasin making. Traditional Indigenous American clothing varies widely from tribe to tribe, but one nearly universal element has been the moccasin, a sturdy slipped-shaped type of shoe sewn from leather.
Family Demonstrations are FREE for all visitors as part of free site admission on Sundays from October 6 through November 3. As part of free site admission, visitors can also take a 30-minute Highlights tour of the historic tavern museum.

Join us at the Ridgefield Library on Sunday, October 20th at 4:00 pm as we welcome Fritz Horstman, Artist, Curator and Education Director for the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, for our next ARTalk.
Horstman will divide his ARTalk into three parts: a discussion of the Alberses’ art and lives; his new book based on Josef Albers’s color teaching titled Interacting with Color: A Practical Guide to Josef Albers’s Color Experiments; and how some of the Albers’s ideas have informed his own artwork.
Josef and Anni Albers were two of the most dynamic and important artists of the 20th century. Both were teachers at the German Bauhaus and at the arts-centric and progressive Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Josef was eventually made chair of the Yale School of Art in 1950, thus bringing him and Anni to Connecticut.
Of special note: Horstman has a solo show entitled Valleys and Blue Light, which is on view at the New Britain Museum of American Art from September 5 through March 30, 2025.
Books on the Common will have copies of Interacting with Color for sale and signing.

Voted Danbury's number 1 solo artist! Co-founder of the J&B Band and solo artist in his own right, Billy Michael has been marching to the beat of popular music from a very early age.
When he was just five years-old, Billy could be heard belting out Ray Charles’ hit “You Don’t Know Me,” which his mother, Dolores, had taught him. In the first grade he was known as “Little Elvis.” The nuns took him from classroom to classroom to sing Elvis’ 1956 hit song “Teddy Bear” for the other students. In high school, he started his first band, Downhill Tangerine, performing songs by Procol Harem and The Doors.

The Valley Concert Series will open its 24/25 season at Valley Presbyterian Church in Brookfield on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 3:00 PM with a performance by Trio Ondata featuring: Michael Ferri, violin; Miriam Liske-Doorandish, cello and Anthony Ratinov, piano.
Please join us as Trio Ondata performs a collection of reflective works from both seminal trio repertoire and some that are off the beaten path, too. It will include trios by Brahms, Beethoven and Gity Razaz.
The trio is a New England-based classical music ensemble who began playing together during their graduate studies at the Yale School of Music. With an inquisitive approach defined by advocacy, dialogue, and thoughtful programming, Trio Ondata strives to use artistry to engage with broader social and cultural contexts, facilitating a connection with wide-ranging repertoire both old and new. A bold and exploratory young ensemble, Trio Ondata has always been drawn to the fringes of the classical repertoire by the belief that music is an ever-evolving, vital means of connection across time and place.
The trio is dedicated to presenting music of the highest caliber from many eras, whether this means contemporary music by historically marginalized artists, obscure Haydn trios performed with Baroque bows, or underperformed works from composers who loom large in the canon. Unafraid of programming that weaves together sounds both familiar and challenging, above all Trio Ondata hopes to invite spaces of close listening in a busy and loud world. We are excited for the return of this talented trio to entertain us again!
The concert is free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $20 gratefully accepted at the door. Parking is free. Handicap parking spaces are also available. Valley is fully wheelchair accessible at the front entrance, with space for wheelchairs in the Sanctuary and handicap accessible restrooms.
Please make sure to LIKE/FOLLOW Valley Music Series and Trio Ondata for more info about this event ... and to stay up to day with other upcoming music events.

Full schedule and artist bios available at CharlesIves150.org

About John Scofield:
Aside from being one of the principal innovators of modern jazz guitar, John Scofield is a creative artist that NPR called “one of the most prolific and admired jazz musicians of his generation.”
A three-time Grammy winner, Scofield has expressed himself in the vernacular of bebop, blues, jazz-funk, organ jazz, acoustic chamber jazz, electronically tinged groove music, jam band style, and orchestral ensembles with ease and enthusiasm.
He’s recorded nearly 50 albums as a leader in the company of such major players as Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Brad Mehldau and Eddie Harris.
About John Scofield Trio:
There has been a John Scofield Trio at play since the late 70’s and it undisputedly remains his favorite format. The newest incarnation – Scofield on guitar, bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Bill Stewart are having fun. They sail through tightly knit sets that typify the musical diversity that has colored Scofield’s long career: time honored jazz standards, rock and blues classics, savvy original Scofield compositions and whatever assorted off-the-cuff improvisations that turn up on a whim. More than just a collection of tunes, they play music that embodies the spirit that has kept improvisational jazz vigorous and visceral since its start.

The Ridgefield Library is pleased to welcome Mark Schenker to present a series of online lectures this fall on novels that engage the themes of curiosity and exploring. Dr. Schenker, formerly of Yale College and a frequent lecturer at the Ridgefield Library, began with Cloud Cuckoo Land (2021), Anthony Doerr’s, inventive and wide-ranging tale that spans Western civilization from Ancient Greece through 15th-century Constantinople to the present-day US, and into the 22nd century.
Turning from the public sphere, on Wednesday, October 23rd at 7:00 pm Mark will now discuss the personal self-discovery of Janie Crawford, the protagonist of Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937). Janie, an African-American woman in 1930s Florida, confronts and shapes her destiny through three marriages and a murder trial. Please register for the Zoom link.
Mark's final lecture in the series will be on Wednesday, November 20th, covering the Norwegian novel, Out Stealing Horses (2003).
This program is part of the Library’s fall scholarly series, The Curious Mind: Exploration and Discovery, which is made possible by the generosity of the Friends of the Ridgefield Library.

The Ridgefield Library is pleased to welcome artist Bonnie Figgatt as she exhibits her botanical drawings and monotypes in our Art Gallery from October 24 - November 21st. All are invited to stop by and meet Bonnie at an Artist's Reception on Saturday, October 26th between 2:00-4:00 pm.
Bonnie has been a botanical artist for 15 years, initially doing extensive coursework in the New York Botanical Garden’s certificate program in botanical art. She recently added monotype printmaking to her practice, first studying at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk.
Drawing tends to be exacting and precise; monotype is less controlled and can be unpredictable. Bonnie has found that alternating between drawing and printmaking refreshes and informs her work.

The Buena Vista Social Orchestra, under the direction of Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos – original orchestra leader, composer, and trombonist of The Buena Vista Social Club – continues the legacy of the legendary group of keeping the arts, music, and culture of Cuba alive.
The exciting, new stage production features a repertoire pulled from their greatest hits, many of which were composed by Ramos, and deep-dive cuts, including music from the Grammy-winning, self-titled Buena Vista Social Club album, released in 1997 and enshrined into the Grammy Hall of Fame this year.
Ramos is joined by an all-star ensemble including original Buena Vista Social Club members “Betun” Luis Mariano Valiente Marin (Congas, Bongo), Emilio Senon Morales Ruiz (Piano) and Fabían Garcia (Bass).
To date, The Buena Vista Social Club and related projects have global sales that stand at over fifty million, making it the biggest-selling Cuban music project in history. As one critic put it, Buena Vista has become “world music’s equivalent of The Dark Side of the Moon.”
